Lost the phone number on your Facebook account? You can usually still get in with your email, a backup code or a device where you are signed in. Here is the order to try, and how to stop it happening again.
Social apps confirm phone numbers to cut spam and fake accounts, and to help you recover the account. Facebook can sign you up with a mobile number or an email address and texts a confirmation code to the number. When you sign in on a new device or reset the password, Facebook sends the code to the number on file, not to the phone you are holding.
| You still have | Do this | How fast |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook open on another phone, tablet or computer | Change the phone number in settings there | Minutes |
| Access to the account email | Use the email code or reset link | Minutes |
| Backup codes or an authenticator app | Sign in with a code, then update the number | Minutes |
| Only your password | Use Facebook's recovery form or support | Hours to days |
| Nothing | Recovery form with proof of ownership (old passwords, payments, ID) | Days, not guaranteed |
Start at facebook.com/login/identify; Facebook can confirm you by email and may ask for an ID or a video selfie. Two-factor is in Accounts Center › Password and security, with an authenticator app, text message or security key, plus recovery codes. A number can be confirmed on only one Facebook account at a time.
Add the new number in Facebook while the old one still works, and remove the old one afterwards. Carriers give unused numbers to new customers after a while, so an old number left on the account can end up with a stranger.
Usually yes: through a signed-in device, your email, backup codes or Facebook's recovery form.
Use Facebook's recovery form or support, and expect to prove the account is yours. It takes longer, so answer carefully and send one request.
Email and backup-code recovery is instant; recovery forms can take hours to several days.
No. Facebook sends codes to the number already on the account. Add the new number after you are back in.
Sometimes, if you contact the carrier soon after losing it; after a few months it may be given to someone else.
Support follows the same checks as the recovery form, so have proof of ownership ready, such as the account email, old passwords or payment details.
