How to Get a Free US Phone Number From Anywhere

Posted on 14/10/26 10:54 am

You can get a free US phone number from outside the United States using a public SMS inbox, a free calling app like TextNow, or Google Voice if you already have a US number to link. Each has limits, especially for verification. This guide covers what works from abroad and what to do when an app rejects the number.

1. Free public US numbers

Our free USA phone numbers are real US numbers whose incoming texts appear on a public page. No sign-up is needed, and they work from any country.

  • Good for: testing, newsletters, low-risk sign-ups.
  • Limits: everyone can read the messages, and major apps often block them.

2. TextNow (US and Canada)

TextNow gives you a free US number supported by ads. It works over Wi-Fi from anywhere, though setting it up from outside the US can be hit and miss. It is a VoIP number, so banks and many apps will not accept it for verification.

3. Google Voice

Google Voice is free, but only for users in the US, and it needs an existing US number for setup. Read how to get a Google Voice number for the steps and the common problems.

4. A private US number for verification

If a free number is rejected, the reliable option is a private non-VoIP US number. These are real US mobile numbers, accepted by apps that refuse VoIP, and you can use them from any country. Popular choices:

You pay only if the code arrives. For one-off sign-ups use a temporary number; if the app will ask again, rent one.

How to write a US number

US numbers have 10 digits: a 3-digit area code, a 3-digit exchange and a 4-digit line number, like (212) 555-0143. In international format add the country code +1: +1 212 555 0143. See the US country code page for dialing instructions.

Which option should you choose?

  • Just testing: a free public US number.
  • Want to call and text Americans: TextNow or Google Voice.
  • Need to verify an app or bank: a private non-VoIP US number.
