The easiest free VoIP numbers come from Google Voice (US), TextNow and TextFree (US and Canada), all of which give you a number for calls and texts over the internet at no cost. They work well for talking to people, but many apps reject VoIP numbers for verification. Here is how to get one and what to use when it gets refused.
A VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) number is a phone number that runs over the internet rather than on a SIM card. You use it through an app on your phone or computer, and it works on Wi-Fi anywhere in the world.
| Provider | Countries | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Voice | USA | Free for personal use; needs an existing US number to set up. See how to get a Google Voice number. |
| TextNow | USA, Canada | Free with ads; number is recycled if inactive. |
| TextFree | USA | Free with ads; app-to-app and SMS. |
Banks, payment apps (Venmo, Cash App, PayPal), WhatsApp, Telegram and many social networks check the line type before sending a code. A VoIP number is flagged as "non-fixed VoIP" and refused, because these numbers are easy to create in bulk.
When that happens, you need a non-VoIP number: a real mobile number from a carrier. With SMS Pin Verify you can get one just for the code, for example for WhatsApp or Gmail, and you only pay if the SMS arrives.
| Free VoIP | Non-VoIP | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Small fee per code |
| Calls and texts with people | Yes | Receive SMS only |
| Accepted by banks and payment apps | Usually not | Yes |
| Accepted by WhatsApp, Telegram, Google | Often blocked | Yes |
