To change your phone number on Instagram, open your profile, tap the menu, go to Accounts Center → Personal details → Contact info, add the new number and confirm it with the code Instagram texts you. Then remove the old number. The steps below work on both iPhone and Android.
Change your Instagram phone number in the app
Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
Tap the menu (three lines) in the top right, then Accounts Center.
Tap Personal details, then Contact info.
Tap Add new contact → Add mobile number.
Enter the new number, choose which accounts it applies to, and tap Next.
Type in the confirmation code Instagram sends by SMS.
Back in Contact info, tap the old number and choose Delete number.
Change it on a computer
Go to instagram.com and log in.
Click More → Settings → Accounts Center.
Open Personal details → Contact info and follow the same steps as above.
Instagram is not sending the confirmation code
Wait and resend. Codes can take a few minutes. Tapping resend too often can trigger a temporary limit.
Check the number format. Choose the right country code and leave out the leading 0.
Number already used. A number can only be linked to a limited number of accounts. Remove it from another account first.
VoIP or shared number. Instagram often blocks numbers from free texting apps and public SMS sites.
If your number is refused, a private non-VoIP number is a real mobile line that Instagram accepts. You can get an Instagram verification number and only pay if the code arrives.
Lost access to your old number?
If you can still log in, simply add the new number as above. If you are locked out and the old number was your only login method, use Forgot password and choose your email address instead, or follow Instagram's account recovery flow, which may ask for a video selfie.
