Can You Use Telegram Without a Phone Number?

You cannot create a normal Telegram account without a phone number, but you can hide your number completely once you are signed up, or sign up with an anonymous number instead of your personal one. Here is how each option works.

Why Telegram needs a phone number

Telegram uses your phone number as your login. It sends a code by SMS (or to another device where you are already logged in) every time you sign in on a new device. This stops most spam accounts, but it also means your number is linked to your account.

Option 1: Hide your number from everyone

Most people asking about Telegram without a phone number really want their number to stay private. Telegram lets you do that:

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number.
  2. Set Who can see my phone number to Nobody.
  3. Set Who can find me by my number to My Contacts.
  4. Create a username under Settings → Edit profile, so people can message you without knowing your number.

Other users, groups and channels will now only see your username.

Option 2: Sign up with a different number

If you do not want Telegram to have your personal number at all, sign up with a second number that you control:

  • A private virtual number. A Telegram verification number from SMS Pin Verify is a real mobile number that receives the sign-up code. You only pay if the code arrives.
  • A second SIM or eSIM from any carrier.
  • An anonymous +888 number bought on Telegram's Fragment marketplace with cryptocurrency (TON). These numbers only work inside Telegram and cost far more than a regular number.

Free public numbers rarely work for Telegram, because thousands of people have already used them. A private non-VoIP number is far more reliable.

Keep access to your account

If you sign up with a temporary number, protect the account straight away:

  • Turn on Two-Step Verification (Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification) and add a recovery email.
  • Stay logged in on at least two devices. Telegram can send login codes to a device that is already signed in, instead of by SMS.
  • If you will need SMS logins later, choose a rental number rather than a one-time number, since one-time numbers can be reassigned.

Can I use Telegram Web without a phone?

Yes, once you have an account. Telegram Web and Telegram Desktop let you log in by scanning a QR code with the app on a device where you are already signed in, without entering your number again.
