Lost the phone number on your Gmail account? You can usually still get in with your email, a backup code or a device where you are signed in. Here is the order to try, and how to stop it happening again.
Email providers use your number to stop bulk sign-ups and to let you back in when you forget the password. Google may ask for a phone number when you create a Gmail account and limits how many accounts one number can verify. When you sign in on a new device or reset the password, Gmail sends the code to the number on file, not to the phone you are holding.
| You still have | Do this | How fast |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail open on another phone, tablet or computer | Change the phone number in settings there | Minutes |
| Access to the account email | Use the email code or reset link | Minutes |
| Backup codes or an authenticator app | Sign in with a code, then update the number | Minutes |
| Only your password | Use Gmail's recovery form or support | Hours to days |
| Nothing | Recovery form with proof of ownership (old passwords, payments, ID) | Days, not guaranteed |
Account recovery at g.co/recover asks questions about the account; a recovery email or a device you are already signed in on helps most. 2-Step Verification (myaccount.google.com › Security) can use Google prompts, an authenticator, passkeys, security keys, text codes and backup codes. Google prefers prompts on a signed-in phone over text codes when both are available.
Add the new number in Gmail while the old one still works, and remove the old one afterwards. Carriers give unused numbers to new customers after a while, so an old number left on the account can end up with a stranger.
Usually yes: through a signed-in device, your email, backup codes or Gmail's recovery form.
Use Gmail's recovery form or support, and expect to prove the account is yours. It takes longer, so answer carefully and send one request.
Email and backup-code recovery is instant; recovery forms can take hours to several days.
No. Gmail sends codes to the number already on the account. Add the new number after you are back in.
Sometimes, if you contact the carrier soon after losing it; after a few months it may be given to someone else.
Support follows the same checks as the recovery form, so have proof of ownership ready, such as the account email, old passwords or payment details.
