Want to use GroupMe without giving out your own phone number? Depending on the step, you can use email, another sign-in method, or a second number you control. Here are the options and their trade-offs.
GroupMe (Microsoft) can sign you up with a phone number or a Microsoft account, and confirms the number with a text code. Messaging apps tie the whole account to one phone number, so the number decides who can log in.
| Option | Privacy | Works later (new device, recovery) |
|---|---|---|
| Email or Google/Apple sign-in | High | Yes, through the email |
| Second SIM or eSIM | High | Yes |
| Rental non-VoIP number | High | Yes, while rented |
| One-time number | High | No, gone after one code |
| Free public number | None: anyone can read it | No |
If your own number never gets the code, a non-VoIP number from a real mobile carrier can. On SMS Pin Verify you can pick a USA number for GroupMe and read the code on your dashboard. A one-time number is held for 15 minutes and costs nothing if no code arrives; a rental keeps the same number for days, which you need if GroupMe will send a code again later.
Often you can sign up with email, but the app may still ask for a number later; a second number you control covers that.
Using a number you own or rent for your own account is normal; creating accounts the app forbids is not.
A non-VoIP mobile number. VoIP and free public numbers are often refused.
Rent if the app will ask for a code again; a one-time number is only for a single code.
Usually not if you keep it private in the settings; check the privacy options.
The app may later send a code you cannot receive. Add email and an authenticator app so you are not locked out.
