Lost the phone number on your X (Twitter) account? You can usually still get in with your email, a backup code or a device where you are signed in. Here is the order to try, and how to stop it happening again.
Social apps confirm phone numbers to cut spam and fake accounts, and to help you recover the account. When you sign in on a new device or reset the password, X (Twitter) sends the code to the number on file, not to the phone you are holding.
| You still have | Do this | How fast |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) open on another phone, tablet or computer | Change the phone number in settings there | Minutes |
| Access to the account email | Use the email code or reset link | Minutes |
| Backup codes or an authenticator app | Sign in with a code, then update the number | Minutes |
| Only your password | Use X (Twitter)'s recovery form or support | Hours to days |
| Nothing | Recovery form with proof of ownership (old passwords, payments, ID) | Days, not guaranteed |
Use the email on the account to reset the password, or help.x.com if you are locked out. Text-message two-factor on X is only for Premium subscribers; others use an authenticator app or security key.
Add the new number in X (Twitter) while the old one still works, and remove the old one afterwards. Carriers give unused numbers to new customers after a while, so an old number left on the account can end up with a stranger.
Usually yes: through a signed-in device, your email, backup codes or X (Twitter)'s recovery form.
Use X (Twitter)'s recovery form or support, and expect to prove the account is yours. It takes longer, so answer carefully and send one request.
Email and backup-code recovery is instant; recovery forms can take hours to several days.
No. X (Twitter) sends codes to the number already on the account. Add the new number after you are back in.
Sometimes, if you contact the carrier soon after losing it; after a few months it may be given to someone else.
Support follows the same checks as the recovery form, so have proof of ownership ready, such as the account email, old passwords or payment details.
