Lost the phone number on your Outlook account? You can usually still get in with your email, a backup code or a device where you are signed in. Here is the order to try, and how to stop it happening again.
Email providers use your number to stop bulk sign-ups and to let you back in when you forget the password. Microsoft may ask for a phone number when you create an Outlook.com account, mainly to stop bulk sign-ups. When you sign in on a new device or reset the password, Outlook sends the code to the number on file, not to the phone you are holding.
| You still have | Do this | How fast |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook open on another phone, tablet or computer | Change the phone number in settings there | Minutes |
| Access to the account email | Use the email code or reset link | Minutes |
| Backup codes or an authenticator app | Sign in with a code, then update the number | Minutes |
| Only your password | Use Outlook's recovery form or support | Hours to days |
| Nothing | Recovery form with proof of ownership (old passwords, payments, ID) | Days, not guaranteed |
If you lost the phone and email, the recovery form at account.live.com/acsr asks questions only the owner would know. Two-step verification at account.microsoft.com/security can use the Microsoft Authenticator app, text, email, a security key or passkey. New security info on a Microsoft account can take 30 days to replace the old one.
Add the new number in Outlook while the old one still works, and remove the old one afterwards. Carriers give unused numbers to new customers after a while, so an old number left on the account can end up with a stranger.
Usually yes: through a signed-in device, your email, backup codes or Outlook's recovery form.
Use Outlook's recovery form or support, and expect to prove the account is yours. It takes longer, so answer carefully and send one request.
Email and backup-code recovery is instant; recovery forms can take hours to several days.
No. Outlook sends codes to the number already on the account. Add the new number after you are back in.
Sometimes, if you contact the carrier soon after losing it; after a few months it may be given to someone else.
Support follows the same checks as the recovery form, so have proof of ownership ready, such as the account email, old passwords or payment details.
