Outlook or Microsoft code not arriving? Try another verification option or the Authenticator app, check your security info, and wait out limits. 8 fixes.
Outlook.com, Hotmail and every other Microsoft service use one Microsoft account, so the same security codes protect all of them. Codes come by text, email or the Microsoft Authenticator app, and a locked account asks for a text code to unlock. Here is what to check when the code doesn't arrive.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Code screen, nothing arrives | Slow delivery, filtered texts or old security info. | Wait, check spam, then choose a different verification option. |
| Your account has been locked | Microsoft saw unusual activity and needs a text code to unlock. | Enter a mobile number to receive the unlock code. |
| Too many codes requested | Microsoft paused codes for this number. | Wait several hours or a day, then try once. |
| Can't use this number | Microsoft refused the number, often an internet (VoIP) line. | Use a regular mobile number. |
| None of the options are yours anymore | Your security info is out of date. | Choose "I don't have any of these" and fill in the recovery form. |
When you replace all your security info, Microsoft waits 30 days before the change takes effect, so a thief who changes it can't lock you out at once. During that time codes may still go to the old phone or email. Plan ahead: add the new number while the old one still works.
Manage it at account.microsoft.com → Security → Advanced security options. Add at least two methods (a phone and an alternate email), or go passwordless with Authenticator.
Microsoft refuses some internet-based (VoIP) numbers, and a number used too often for codes can be paused.
In that case a non-VoIP number is the practical fix. These are real mobile-carrier numbers, which is what Outlook expects. On SMS Pin Verify you can pick a USA number for Outlook and the code appears on screen in your account:
Two honest limits: a code is never guaranteed, because Outlook decides whether to send it; and a number may have been used on Outlook before you, so start a fresh account rather than trying to recover an old one.
Old security info, filtered texts, or too many requests. Choose a different verification option or use Authenticator.
The unlock screen accepts any mobile number that can receive a text. Enter one and use the code.
It is a protection: if someone else changes it, you have time to stop them.
Free and VoIP numbers often don't. Non-VoIP mobile numbers work much more often.
