Yahoo code not arriving? Check the number or recovery email on the account, try another sign-in method, and wait out limits. 8 fixes in order.
Yahoo sends verification codes when you create an account, sign in from a new device and recover a password. It can also use Account Key, a notification in the Yahoo Mail app, instead of a code. Here is how to get in when the code doesn't show up.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Code screen, nothing arrives | Slow delivery, filtered texts or an old recovery number. | Wait a minute, check spam, then use "Try another way" if offered. |
| Notification to approve instead of a code | Account Key is on for this account. | Open the Yahoo Mail app and tap Yes. |
| Message that you tried too many times | Yahoo paused codes after many requests. | Wait several hours, then try once. |
| Number not accepted at sign-up | Yahoo refused the number, often an internet (VoIP) line or one used for many accounts. | Use a regular mobile number. |
| Wrong or expired code | Old or mistyped code. | Request one new code and use it right away. |
Many people return to a Yahoo address after years and find the recovery phone is an old number. Yahoo will only send codes to the phone or email saved on the account, so Sign-in Helper and recovery are the only routes back. Answer from a device and location you used before; that helps.
Once you are in, update Account Security → Phone numbers and Email addresses, and add an alternate email, so the next code reaches you. Yahoo can also delete accounts that are not used for a long time, so sign in now and then.
Yahoo refuses some internet-based (VoIP) numbers and numbers already used for many accounts.
In that case a non-VoIP number is the practical fix. These are real mobile-carrier numbers, which is what Yahoo expects. On SMS Pin Verify you can pick a USA number for Yahoo and the code appears on screen in your account:
Two honest limits: a code is never guaranteed, because Yahoo decides whether to send it; and a number may have been used on Yahoo before you, so start a fresh account rather than trying to recover an old one.
Usually an old recovery number, filtered texts, Account Key being on, or too many attempts. Try another way on the code screen.
A sign-in method that sends a notification to the Yahoo Mail app instead of a code. Tap Yes to sign in.
Yahoo usually asks for one at sign-up. See our guide below for the options.
Free and VoIP numbers often don't. Non-VoIP mobile numbers work much more often.
