Google Voice Code Not Received? 8 Fixes That Work

Posted on 31/10/26 07:42 pm

Google Voice code not arriving? The number you link must be a real US mobile or landline, not another internet number. Here are 8 fixes, in order.

There are two different problems people call "Google Voice code not received": the 6-digit code Google sends when you set up Google Voice and link your own phone, and codes from other apps that never reach your Google Voice number. This guide covers both, starting with setup.

Check these first (30 seconds)

  • The number you are linking. Google Voice sends the setup code to an existing US phone number that you own. It must be a regular mobile or landline line, not another Google Voice number.
  • Text or call. Mobile numbers get the code by text. A landline can be verified by a phone call instead, when Google offers it.
  • Spam and filtered texts. Check the spam or "unknown senders" folder in your messages app.
  • One account per number. A phone number can be linked to only one Google Voice account at a time.

8 fixes, in order

  1. Check the number type. Make sure you are linking a US mobile or landline number that is yours and can receive texts or calls.
  2. Send the code once more. Wait for the screen to allow it, then request a single new code. Use only the newest one.
  3. Verify by call. For a landline, or a mobile that does not get texts, choose the call option if Google Voice offers it.
  4. Turn off SMS filters. Pause spam filters, "filter unknown senders" and call or text blocker apps on the phone you are linking.
  5. Use the website. Set up or link the number at voice.google.com in a desktop browser if the app gets stuck.
  6. Free the number from an old account. If the number is linked to another Google Voice account you own, remove it there first under Settings → Account → Linked numbers.
  7. Wait out a limit. After many attempts Google can pause new codes for a while. Leave it for several hours and try once.
  8. Use a different number. If the line never receives Google's code or is refused, link another US number (see below).

Codes sent to a Google Voice number

Once Google Voice works, many people try to use the Google Voice number itself to sign up for other apps, and the code never arrives. There are two common reasons. First, many companies send codes from short codes (5- or 6-digit senders), and Google Voice does not receive messages from most short codes. Second, banks, payment apps and many social apps refuse internet-based (VoIP) numbers such as Google Voice, so they never send the code at all.

That is not something you can fix in Google Voice settings. If an app needs a mobile number, give it a real mobile number. Read how to get a Google Voice number for setup itself.

When your own number just won't work

To set up Google Voice you need a US number that can receive Google's code. If you do not have one, a real mobile-carrier (non-VoIP) number can receive it. On SMS Pin Verify you can get a USA number for Google Voice and the code appears in your account:

  • One-time number: held 15 minutes for one code; not charged if no code arrives.
  • Rental number: the same number for several days or longer. Better if you want the linked number to keep working, because Google can ask you to verify the linked number again.

A code is never guaranteed, because Google decides whether to send it, and Google may later ask you to re-verify the linked number.

Keep your account after you get in

  • Secure the Google account with 2-Step Verification and a passkey or authenticator app, since Google Voice lives inside it.
  • Use your Google Voice number regularly. Google can reclaim numbers that are not used for a long time.
  • Keep a linked number you control so you can recover or move the Google Voice number later.
  • Never share a Google Voice code. A common scam asks sellers to "verify" with a code, which actually sets up a Google Voice number on the scammer's account in your name.

FAQ

Why is Google Voice not sending me a verification code?

The number you are linking may be an internet number, another Google Voice number or already linked elsewhere. Link a regular US mobile or landline.

Can Google Voice receive verification codes from other apps?

Often not. Most short-code texts don't reach Google Voice, and many apps refuse VoIP numbers.

Can I verify Google Voice with a landline?

Yes, Google can call a landline with the code when that option is offered.

Someone asked me to read them a Google Voice code. Is that safe?

No. That is a known scam to open a Google Voice number with your phone. Never share the code.
