PayPal code not arriving? Check the number on your account, allow PayPal's short code, and use "Try another way" if it's offered. 8 fixes in order.
PayPal texts a security code when you log in from a new device, confirm a phone number, or use 2-step verification. In the US the texts usually come from the short code 729725 (PAYPAL). Because it protects money, PayPal is strict about numbers, so start with the quick check.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Code screen, but no text arrives | Slow delivery, blocked short codes, or an old number on the account. | Wait a minute, check spam, then try "Resend" once. |
| "We're sorry, we couldn't send a code" | PayPal could not deliver to that number. | Choose "Try another way", or check the number with your carrier. |
| "Too many attempts" | Too many codes requested or wrong codes. | Stop and wait a few hours. |
| "Your account access is limited" | PayPal restricted the account. A code alone won't lift it. | Log in on paypal.com and open the Resolution Center / notifications. |
| Authenticator code asked for | You chose an authenticator app for 2-step verification. | Open that app; the code is there, not in your texts. |
PayPal asks for a code more often when something looks new: a new phone, a new browser, a new country or a new internet connection. That is normal, and it is exactly when a missing text hurts most.
Before you travel, set up an authenticator app for 2-step verification (Settings → Security → 2-step verification). Authenticator codes work without signal or roaming, so you can still log in from abroad. If you rely on texts, check that your plan allows incoming SMS from short codes while roaming; many plans block them.
Logging in on a new phone? Keep the old phone until you are in, and log in from a network you have used before when you can. PayPal is less likely to ask for extra checks from a place it recognises.
Your phone number is part of how PayPal protects your money. If it changes, PayPal may ask for extra checks before it lets you in, and it may limit the account until you confirm who you are. That is why a number you might lose is a poor choice for PayPal.
To change numbers, log in, go to Settings → Account → Phone, add the new number, confirm it, and only then remove the old one.
If your carrier never delivers PayPal's texts, a different US mobile number can help, but the number must keep working for as long as you use the account.
On SMS Pin Verify you can get a USA number for PayPal, a real mobile-carrier (non-VoIP) line, and the code shows in your account:
A code is never guaranteed, because PayPal decides whether to send it. Never use a number to get around a PayPal limitation or another person's identity checks.
In the US, PayPal security codes usually come from the short code 729725. If you blocked it, text START to it.
Yes, tap Try another way to choose email, a call or an authenticator app if they are set up.
The number on your account can't receive its texts, or short codes are blocked. Check the number and your carrier settings.
Log in, go to Settings, then Account, then Phone. Add and confirm the new number before removing the old one.
