TikTok code not arriving? Usually the number is wrong, you hit the attempt limit, or texts are filtered. Switch to email if you can. 8 fixes below.
TikTok sends a 6-digit code to sign up, log in with your phone number, or confirm a login with 2-step verification. When it doesn't arrive, the cause is almost always one of a handful of things. Here they are in the order worth checking.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Timer, then "Resend code" | A code was sent; you must wait before asking again. | Wait, check spam, then tap "Resend code" once. |
| "Maximum number of attempts reached. Try again later." | Too many codes requested or wrong codes entered. | Stop for a few hours, often a full day, then try once. |
| "Too many attempts" | Same limit, from the login screen. | Wait it out, or log in with email or username and password. |
| "This phone number is already registered" | Another TikTok account uses the number. | Log in to that account, or use another number or email. |
| "Incorrect code" | An old or mistyped code. | Use only the newest code you received. |
TikTok lets you sign up with either. A phone number is quick, but if you lose the number you also lose the easiest way to log in. An email address is easier to keep for years and gets the code in your inbox, which is never blocked by your carrier.
The safest setup is both: sign up with one, then add the other under Settings and privacy → Account → Account information, and set a password. Then a missing text code never locks you out, because you can log in with email and password instead.
Running a TikTok Shop or a business account? Those can ask for extra verification and a phone number in your name; see TikTok Shop phone verification. Travelling? Texts to your home number need roaming that allows incoming SMS, so use email codes while you are away.
If you turned on 2-step verification, TikTok asks for a second step when you log in on a new device. If the text never comes, choose another method you set up, such as email or an authenticator app.
If the account is linked to a number you no longer have, log in with email or username and password, then change the number under Settings and privacy → Account → Account information → Phone number. If you can't log in at all, use "Report a problem" from the login screen's help menu.
TikTok refuses some internet-based (VoIP) numbers and numbers already linked to another account.
In that case a non-VoIP number is the practical fix. These are real mobile-carrier numbers, which is what TikTok expects. On SMS Pin Verify you can pick a USA number for TikTok and the code appears on screen in your account:
Two honest limits: a code is never guaranteed, because TikTok decides whether to send it; and a number may have been used on TikTok before you, so start a fresh account rather than trying to recover an old one.
It varies from a few hours to about a day. Every new try during the wait can extend it.
Yes. Choose Email / Username on the sign-up or login screen.
Usually a wrong country code, the attempt limit, filtered texts, or a number TikTok doesn't accept.
Yes, you can sign up with an email address instead.
Non-VoIP mobile numbers usually do; free online numbers are often refused or already used.
